Plugg is a one day conference focused on raising global awareness for European start-ups in the Web / Mobile 2.0 field. In combination with an impressive list of speakers – one by one visionaries and/or field experts from a variety of industries and all with ties to Europe -, there will be a place for 20 hot start-ups to showcase their business ideas and realizations. One of them will walk away with the Plugg Start-Up of the Year Award.

Technology is ever-evolving, and subsequently also the applications built for web and mobile. Plugg wants to provide a platform for emerging European technology, mobile and enterprise start-ups and place them in front of a professional audience tied to the tech and venture capital industry. Europe does not have anything close to the Silicon Valley ecosystem and all of its advantages, but this part of the world does have a lot of potential and multiple benefits that in return cannot be matched by the San Francisco Bay Area. Let’s keep on growing the European web business into a solid player on a global level!

In addition to providing a platform for high-potential start-ups, we will host a series of keynotes delivered by some of Europe’s top visionaries and field experts from various industries (VC, media, entrepreneur, research & mobile). Visit the list of speakers to get an idea of what to expect.

Plugg will be held on Wednesday the 19th of March 2008 in Brussels, the capital of Belgium and Europe. For more practical info, click here.

Why the name ‘Plugg’?
Various angles apply, as Wikipedia will teach you: of course there’s the link with electronics and technology, but there’s more. In horticulture, plugs are small-sized seedlings grown in trays which are often used for commercially raising vegetables and bedding plants. Then there’s product plugs, plugins, ‘plug and play’ and the etymological origin. Oh, and the .eu domain name was still available.

Who organizes Plugg?
Plugg is a grassroots organization ventured by social media consultant and allround web enthusiast Robin Wauters. Next to his consulting activities, Robin blogs in English on Web.2point0.be, TheNextWeb.org and MarketingBlog.eu, and used to edit blognation Belgium & Luxembourg before the project broke down. He also blogs in Dutch on T-Zine, Belgian quality newspaper De Tijd’s technology & multimedia blog. Robin also organizes the monthly OpenCoffee Club Brussels meetups.

He is helped by Veronique Pochet, a seasoned event marketing professional with a lot of hands-on experience in organizing large conferences (VNU Business Publications, Roularta, …)
